‘It looked like someone from Star Trek was trying to beam people up’

An Ontario man was unsure whether he was witnessing the Northern Lights or an alien invasion when he woke up to soothe his crying toddler at 1:30 a.m. on January 6. After getting Baby back to sleep, he ran outside to capture these magnificent photos:

“It looked like someone from Star Trek was trying to beam people up,” Elzinga says in the video below.

Upon further research, Elzinga learned the were a natural, but rare, weather phenomenon called light pillars.

Light pillars, according to Wikipedia, are vertical bands of light which appear to extend above and/or below a light source. The effect is created by the reflection of light from numerous tiny ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere or clouds.

A similar light-pillar display in Alaska sparked rumors of UFOs around this same time last year.
