Big Pharma Caught Selling Key Ingredient for Meth to Drug Cartel

Ever wondered where the ingredients for illicit street drugs come from? One story suggests pharmaceutical companies may be the suppliers for at least some.

Three major Belgian pharmaceutical companies got caught selling millions of dollars worth of a key ingredient for making meth to a Mexican drug cartel last year, an under-covered Reuter’s article reveals.

Between 2006 and 2011, the corporations allegedly sold approximately four tons of ephedrine and pseudoephedrine — sufficient for the production of about 66 million methamphetamine capsules — valued around $370 million.

Representatives from two of the companies, Sterop and Andacon, claimed they were completely unaware the drugs had been used for illicit purposes. Prosecuting attorneys say they have phone and email evidence suggesting otherwise.

They accuse they companies of dealing directly with known drug cartel leader, Ezio Figueroa Vazquez.  Vazquez and his son have been named “Specially Designated Narcotics Traffickers” under the U.S. Kingpin Act. Under this law, U.S. citizens are prohibited from involvement in financial or commercial transactions with these individuals. The US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has also connected Vasquez to the currently imprisoned Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, head of the Sinaloa Cartel, the most active supplier of crystal meth to the U.S.

Methamphetamine – commonly known by the names crystal meth, ice, crank, and glass – is usually manufactured by amateur “cooks” using dangerous and toxic chemicals such as lye, lithium, and ammonia. Its key ingredient, ephedrine, is generally procured from over-the-counter medicines such as cough syrups and nasal decongestants.

As we’ve previously reported, the effects of Adderall — a popular prescription drug given to children diagnosed with ADHD — and meth are virtually identical, according to a neuroscientists who’s studied the drugs extensively.

Strange to think the same industry that pushes Adderall on children is secretly supplying a similar drug to addicts on the street.
