National Geographic just released a heartwarming video (below) of a baby elephant being rescued from a well in Kerala, India.
Woken by the baby’s trumpeting early in the morning, villagers rushed to its aid, carefully filling the well in with dirt around the elephant.
When the elephant is finally free, its family, watching the rescue from afar, comes running to scoop it up.
Before disappearing into the forest the mother elephant turns toward the people and raises her trunk what appears to be some sort of salute. In India, this is believed to be an elephant’s way of saying thank you.
