Bras Make Breasts Sag, 15-Year Study Concludes

Bras weaken the ligaments and muscles that hold up breasts

“Breasts gain no benefit from being denied gravity,” says Jean-Denis Rouillon, a sports science expert from the University of Besançon, France.

“On the contrary, they get saggier with a bra.”

Rouillon led a study in which he carefully measured changes in breast features of hundreds of women over a 15-year period.

Women who never wore bras had nipples on average 7 millimeters higher in relation to their shoulders each year than regular bra wearers.

Their breasts were also firmer, and their stretch marks faded.

Rouillon and his research team believe wearing bras prevented the growth of breast tissue, which lead to deterioration of the ligaments and muscles that support the breasts. If you don’t wear a bra, the ligaments and muscles are worked-out more, they suggest.

One volunteer, a 28-year-old woman named Capucine said that she hasn’t worn a bra in two years. She told France Info that not wearing the underwear has helped her breathe better, stand straighter and have less back pain.

The younger women are when they stop wearing a bra, the greater the benefits, he said.
