McDonalds’ Declared “Essential Business,” as Healthy Restaurants are Forced to Close

Fast food chains may be the only restaurants equipped to survive coronavirus, as many states shut down all but drive-thrus and delivery

As restaurant bans sweep the country, state and city governments are allowing — and even encouraging — fast food restaurants to stay open because they are equipped for takeout with drive-thrus and delivery services.

Earlier this week, CEOs of McDonald’s, Burger King, Chick-fil-A, Papa John’s and Popeyes  had a conference call with President Trump to convince him fast food is crucial for Americans to survive the coronavirus outbreak,” reports Business Insider.

“If we don’t utilize businesses like Burger King … It’s really difficult for Americans to be fed, because it’s going to be difficult for them to get all their food from the supermarket,” argued the CEO of Restaurant Brands International, which owns Burger King, Popeyes and Tim Horton’s.

“With 14,000+ restaurants across the country, we have a long legacy of being a dependable neighbor in times of need,” McDonald’s USA President Joe Erlinger said in a statement.

“McDonald’s will do our part to continue to be a place people can count on to deliver a familiar, comforting and delicious experience, no matter where they are.”

They argued that truckers and medical workers who didn’t have time to shop or a place to cook rely on their services.

They also expressed concern about a bill that would require employers to provide 14 days of paid sick leave to employees.

Trump seems to support the industry’s request for exemption from an increasing number of local government shutdowns of restaurants, according to Business Insider, who listened in on their call.

The government is also likely to provide interest-free short-term loans to help smaller fast food franchises stay afloat, according to American Enterprise Institute.

Those are advantages small, local restaurants, which often provide farm-to-table organic food, won’t be able to complete with, further strengthening the fast-food-and-factory-farm cartel at a time we need real food the most.
