Canada blocks shark fin imports. The US should also ban this cruel and ecologically disastrous industry.

Canada recently became the first major economic player in the world to ban the importation of shark fins.

Shark finning and exportation was already illegal in the country, but Canada was the largest importer of shark fins outside of Asia.

The cruel and inhumane practice involves hacking off sharks fins while they are still alive and struggling and then tossing the animals back into the ocean to die slowly.

The fin meat is sold as a delicacy in Asian cuisine such as shark fin soup. It is the most expensive seafood in the world.

Aside from being an extremely wasteful practice in general, a third of the fins sold come from “at risk” shark species.

Canadians imported nearly 150,000 tons of shark fins from China last year.

Shark fin importation is now illegal in 12 US states as well with a bill in Congress to ban it nationwide.
