The Natural Age of Weaning

August 23, 2017 at 8:25 pm

Mothers today are bombarded with all kinds of conflicting advice on how long they should breastfeed. Some are told it’s “gross” or “weird” to nurse beyond six or 12 months. Some consider nursing a 2 or 3-year-old to be “extended” breastfeeding.

How Praise and Rewards Can Be as Damaging as Punishment

March 31, 2017 at 7:58 pm

Parents of our generation are coming to understand that punishment is psychologically damaging and ineffective at improving children’s behavior. But many of us who’ve condemned spanking and solitary confinement (time-outs/grounding) are still unaware of the damage created by a more insidious form of control – rewards and praise.

While a “good job” here and an “atta boy” there seem harmless enough, psychologist Robin Grille says praising or “rewarding children’s compliance is the flip-side of punishing their disobedience.”

Photo of Breast Milk Repelling Harmful Bacteria Goes Viral

February 10, 2017 at 9:31 am

Amazing photo shows how breast milk repels harmful bacteria like e.coli and MRSA

A photo showing droplets of breast milk fending off armies of harmful bacteria in Petri dishes is going viral on Facebook.

The photo, posted by a biology student in England, features nine Petri dishes completely colonized with the bacteria M. Luteus, except in the center, where tiny puddles of breast milk have created what looks like “moats” of protection around themselves.

The student, Vicky Green, said she had similar results with Petri dishes full of e.Coli and the dreaded anti-biotic resistant “super bug” MRSA.

Beautiful Photos of Mammals Safely “Co-Sleeping” with Their Babies, As We’ve Done for Millions of Years

May 13, 2016 at 8:11 pm

The term “co-sleeping” has always seemed strange to me. It implies parents are doing something special or out-of-the-ordinary by doing what mammals have always done for millions of years – sleep with their babies.

“Are you going to co-sleep?” people asked when I was pregnant. “What kind of co-sleeper are you going to buy?”

At first, I had no idea what they were talking about. Then I became aware of the vast market of overpriced baskets parents could buy to ensure they didn’t “roll over and kill their babies:”

“Spanking” Children Is Domestic Violence

Spanking causes long-term psychological damage, according to “the most comprehensive study to date”

None

While the average American would look at you like you were crazy if you said it was okay for a man to hit his wife if she didn’t obey him, that same person would likely argue that hitting – or “spanking” – children is not only acceptable, but advisable for producing “well-behaved, functioning” members of society.

This not only defies logic, it defies science.

Why I Sometimes Wish I’d Had an Abortion

March 7, 2016 at 4:53 pm

422508_10151380249240106_318511931_nIn a previous blog post, I wrote about how having a baby changed my mind about abortion. The hardship of four years of unplanned parenthood made me change my former staunch pro-life position.

But in this post, I want to be even more explicit. It’s not just that I now support women’s right to choose as some sort of abstract ideology. I actually often regret having a child myself. Especially lately.

I recently posted on Facebook about four abused, neglected siblings who are up for adoption as a package deal. Who knows, maybe their parents were great and CPS just kidnapped them for no reason. But that’s beside the point. The point is there are basically zero happy, healthy, financially-prepared, functioning families out there willing to adopt four kids.

Circumcision is Torture and Child Abuse

The people behind the knife should be behind bars for life

thumb Baby boys are being brutally tortured every 25 seconds in the United States.

Let’s not mince words about it. That’s what circumcision is – torture, sexual assault, genital mutilation, unconscionable child abuse, and possibly the worst violation of human rights in history.

The mother of an only-daughter, I really had no reason to research circumcision I had no idea of the horrors it entailed until recently. One of the moms in our peaceful-parenting play-date group enlightened me in the park last week. She sent me a few links, and I dove in. What a can of worms…

Why I Still Breastfeed My 5-Year-Old

February 19, 2016 at 5:50 pm

A couple of years ago, I came across a story about a mother who still breastfeeds her 5-year-old daughter. I’m not really sure why it was newsworthy, but people were shocked to discover a woman feeding her small child the same way all mammals have for millions of years.

All kinds of bloggers picked up the story, and busybodies left comments calling the dedicated mother every name in the book — “gross” … “disgusting” … “indecent” … “unnatural” … “sinister” … “perverse” … “what’s wrong with the world.”

The most disturbing accusations hurled at this woman were those of “pedophilia” and “child abuse.”

Why Having a Baby Made Me Pro-Choice

326801_10150788721825106_393138554_o-300x225“I wonder how many people have abortions after they’ve experienced giving birth,” my partner, Brad, said a few hours after our daughter was born.

“I bet not many,” I responded, still high from the fact that a tiny human just swam out of my body and latched onto my breast. “I mean look at her… how could they knowingly destroy something so beautiful?”

Four years later, I know exactly how.

Before you start accusing me of being some kind of sick, twisted, child-hating, terrible mother, hear me out.
